In a perfect world, every home would have enough bathrooms to accommodate large families. But not every home has multiple bathrooms, and if you live in a home that's short on bathroom space, you may have to share that space with multiple family members.

But how do you share a single bathroom with multiple people, and make sure everyone has the time and space in the bathroom they need?

A recent article from realtor.com outlined tips on how to successfully share a bathroom with multiple family members, including:

  • Create a schedule. Almost everyone needs to use the bathroom at the start of the day to get ready before leaving the house, and at the end of the day to get ready for bed. But when multiple people are sharing the same bathroom, it can be hard for everyone to get the time they need. Create a schedule for each family member that outlines when (and for how long) they have access to the bathroom in the morning and evening; that way, you can minimize overlaps, and ensure everyone gets the time they need to get ready for the day and/or for bed. Make sure to plan around each family member's schedule needs. For example, if your child has a bedtime of 8pm, you want to make sure to schedule their bathroom time early enough so they can get to bed on time.
  • Assign storage spaces. Multiple people sharing a bathroom also means that the bathroom needs to store each person's stuff, and with so much stuff, things can very easily get messy and disorganized. To keep things orderly — and ensure that each person can find what they need, when they need it — assign specific storage spaces (like cubbies or shelves) for each family member.
  • Opt for towel hooks. Towel bars take up a lot of space, making them not the best option for bathrooms that are shared by multiple family members. Instead, install towel hooks for each family member, which are more small space-friendly, and will also ensure that everyone knows which towel to use come shower or bath time.
